Self Introduction

 Dear Professor Blackstone,

I hope this email finds you well. My name is Priya and I am thrilled to be attending your critical thinking and communicating module. I would like to introduce myself and share my goals for this module.

I graduated from Catholic Junior College in 2023 after completing my A-levels. My interest in Civil Engineering started with my uncle who works in the field. Growing up I admired how passionate he was about his work and his focus on sustainable practices. Sustainable practices such as incorporating renewable resources and finding ways to reduce the carbon footprint when working on his projects. This really inspired me, and it’s part of why I decided to pursue H2 physics and mathematics in junior college. I wanted to build a strong foundation for a career in engineering. Furthermore, I’ve always been fascinated by the infrastructure around me, and civil engineering felt like the perfect way to channel that interest into something meaningful.

Persuasion is one of my communication strengths. During a project in junior college, I suggested modernizing wet markets in Singapore, but my teammates weren’t on board at first. I then took the time to do research and present evidence to show the potential idea, and eventually we all agreed to move forward with it. However, I realized that active listening is something I need to work on. I noticed during that same project that I sometimes cut my teammates off to share my remarks about their inputs which wasn’t fair to them

Through this module, I want to become a better listener and ensure I give space to my teammates to share their thoughts fully. I also hope to build my overall presentation skills.

What sets me apart from the others is my adaptability, as I can adjust to new situations and thrive in environments that requires flexibility and change with ease.

Thank you for taking time to read this. I look forward to learning and growing in your class.

Sincerely,

Sakthi Priya Sundar

  2. Hello Priya,

Thank you for sharing about yourself. I am glad to see that you have made such a big leap into Civil engineering while keeping a positive attitude, which is inspiring to me as a long time civil engineering student. I really love to follow your journey of being inspired by your uncle all the way to your present studies as it makes it engaging.
I like how you really know both your strengths in persuasion and weakness of active listening as it shows how much self realisation and growth that you went through about yourself.

While I really like to read your blog, I have one pointer for you as I would love to see you grow. I would've liked to see you delve deeper into how you intend to improve your presenting and active listening skills as it seems that you have only scratched the surface on it and i think it will be very engaging if it was better illustrated.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading your introduction and hope to see more from your blog!

    Regards,

  5. Dear Priya,

Thank you for this well developed and informative letter. You address the points of the brief in a fairly comprehensive manner.

I appreciate learning, for example, about the influence of your uncle on your choice of CVE and the "sustainable practices" he followed, though another sentence of explanation about such practices might make this thought even more vivid.

I also like you sharing about your project work and wet markets. You couch that in persuasion being a communication strength. That's really excellent, and I look forward to learning about your project team's topic this term and if you can have the same sort of impact as you did in poly.

In your letter, you also explain how active listening is something you "need to work on." I appreciate the honesty in such a self assessment. Of course, awareness is the first step to change.

In terms of your language use, this letter is a very good effort. There are, however, a few areas that I'd like you to take note of:

    1. My interest in Civil Engineering started.... / ...I decided to pursue H2 Physics and Math.... > (overuse of caps) ?
    2. ... I can easily adjust to new situations and thrive in environments that requires flexibility and change. > (subject-verb disagreement)

I look forward to learning more from you this term.

    Best wishes,

    Brad
